Dr Yiorghos Leventis, Executive Director of International Security Forum, Cyprus and an Allumni Postdoctoral Fellow of the United Nations University (UNU) HQ, Tokyo (2004-06), participated in the 23rd Annual Meeting of The Academic Council on the UN System - ACUNS, held in Vienna, Austria. Debates of the 2010 ACUNS Meeting centred on the theme  of responses to New Security Challenges. 

The 23rd ACUNS Meeting was addressed, inter alia, by Danilo Turk, President of Slovenia; Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General, United Nations Industrial Development Organization; Barbara Prammer, President, Austrian National Council; Mary Robinson, Former UN HC for Human Rights; Manfred Nowak, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment; Bertrand Ramcharan, Former UN Deputy HC for Human Rights.

During the three day 2010 ACUNS Meeting in Vienna, Dr Leventis had the opportunity  to expose the work of the International Security Forum, Cyprus to the 350 participants. In this context he held briefings with his opposite number, ACUNS Executive Director Patricia Goff;  Prof. Ramesh Thakur, former UNU Senior Vice Rector and UN Assistant SG, Michael Moller,  Executive Director Kofi Annan Foundation, Geneva (former UN SR in Cyprus 2006-08); Lakhdar Brahimi, former UN Secretary-General Special Adviser. 

Dr Leventis also met with Dr Jeffrey Henderson, Director of Studies, UGSM - Monarch Business School. The University of Graduate Management Studies Monarch is proudly sponsoring the International Security Forum activities.

Marking the first anniversary of its successful operation the International Security Forum organizes a day conference on The Future Architecture of European & Global Security. The topics to be debated focus on nuclear disarmament (new START & NPT Treaties), UN reform, the role of NATO, ESDP, the US, the UK, Greece and Cyprus, the Scandinavian countries and Russia in building European and global security.

Mr. Shahriar Mahmoud Sharei: The Challenge of Nuclear Disarmament: Dis-invent the Bomb or Re-invent the UN?

Dr. Yiorghos Leventis, Director of International Security Forum, delivered two speeches,  within the space of one week, upon invitation of both Rotary Clubs of the Cypriot capital.

The first one was delivered at the Rotary Club of Nicosia - Ledra luncheon meeting at the Hilton Hotel Nicosia on Tuesday, 16 February 2010. Dr. Leventis briefed the Rotary Club members on his experience as Postdoctoral Fellow with the Peace & Governance Programme, United Nations University (UNU), Headquarters and his work at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Tokyo (2004-06). His speech was followed by a lively questions and answers session.

A week later, on Monday 22 February 2010, Dr. Yiorghos Leventis, delivered a second speech upon invitation issued by the other Rotary Club of the Cypriot capital: Nicosia - Lefkothea. The well-attended luncheon was also held at the Nicosia Hilton Hotel. Dr. Leventis's speech centred on "The Position of Cyprus, Greece and Turkey in the ESDP". The audience included Cypriot and international businessmen and other professionals. His speech was well received: attendants who took the floor, coincided with the views expressed by the ISF Director. At the end of the event, the President of the Nicosia - Lefkothea Rotary Club, Mr. Glafkos Georghiou presented Dr. Yiorghos Leventis the Club's Guest Speaker's Certificate of Appreciation

 

 

 

Dr Yiorghos Leventis, Director of International Security Forum Cyprus, accepted an invitation extended by Dr Hidemitsu Kuroki, Director of the Japan Center for Middle Eastern Studies (JaCMES) to participate in an International Workshop on the Future of Iraq: Social, Economic and Political Issues in Question. The workshop which took place at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Beirut, forms part of a couple of series of seminars under the themes Conflict, Collapsed State and Social Movements in the Contemporary sponsored by Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and Searching for New Notion of Area and Coexistence: Bridging Middle East and Asia, Needs-based Programme for Area Studies, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. Both programmes are under the direction of Professor Keiko Sakai, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS).

In the margins of the Iraq international workshop held during the weekend of 16-17 January 2010, Dr Leventis was afforded the opportunity to exchange views on world affairs and the role of Japan in particular, with Dr Hidemitsu Kuroki and other panelists and participants. He returned to Lefkosia on Sunday 17 January.
